12 Days 11 Nights Package description: Day 1: Arrival and welcome at the Managua International Airport. We will go directly to the top of Mombacho Volcano to spend the night at 1,250 meters at the Biological Center. At night we will enjoy a delicious dinner. After dinner we will go on a night walk around the crater to see the night flora and fauna. Experience an enchanting tropical cloud forest with fascinating views of the city of Granada at night, Lake Cocibolca, the Asese Peninsula with its 365 small Islands, rare Orchids and flowers. Enjoy exotic wildlife like the Endemic Mombacho Salamander, White-Faced and Howler Monkeys. Experience walking around in the silent and always unpredictable Mombacho Cloud Forest. Learn more about: “Never pick the golden flower or you’re lost forever”! Day 2: Today we start with breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee grown a few hundred meters below! The weather is cool and we will go for a walk around the old craters. Afterwards, we will travel half way down the volcano to do the Canopy Tour. We will zip line over the coffee plantations and through the trees, enjoying nature while the adrenaline rushes through your body. We finish the morning by taking a half hour transport to the beautiful colonial city of Granada, where we will check in at our hotel. In the afternoon we will go to the lake and kayak around the 365 small islands. See the islands in a unique way. By kayaking we can go where motorboats can’t. See the jungle, savannah, birds and an old fort used to protect Granada from pirates in colonial times. Day 3: Transport to Matagalpa. After arriving in Matagalpa we will continue to the community of La Pita. Here we will stay our first night in rustic cabins with private bathrooms. The area is full of beautiful nature where fair trade coffee is grown by a local co-operative. A typical country diner and breakfast will be served by our host family. Day 4: This day is our first hike, +/- 8 hours. We will pass by big coffee farms on our way to the village of La Corona where the local guide will show us a local farm and the waterfall where we can go for a swim. The heights of the mountains we will hike are El Inocente (1247 meters) and the mountain Saslaya (1651 meters). We will stay overnight at the farmer’s houses in this community Day 5: We continue hiking through fields of traditional farms of corn and beans. To reach our next destination we will go by 4x4 vehicles and hike the impressive mountain of Peñas Blancas. In the village of Peñas Blancas we will stay the night at the eco-hostel run by the co-operative. Day 6: Today we will continue hiking up to the highest point of the jungle (1500 meters), which is part of the Bosawas biosphere reserve, and to an impressive waterfall. Afterwards we will return by vehicle to the city of Matagalpa where we will spend the last night in a hotel. Day 7: Today we will travel to Esteli, the city tour will take us to some of the busiest streets in Nicaragua, business, stores. Estelí is known to be the city of murals; art is painted on the walls of the main streets. We will also visit a cigar Factory. During this tour we will see how cigars are made, the process and you will have the chance to taste some of the best cigars in Nicaragua. Tour of the factory is 1 hour. After lunch we will continue the tour to the rosquilla bakery on the road to Somoto and the womens pottery cooperative in Ducuale Grande. Here we will have the chance to buy pottery and help the women with their work. We will spend the night in Somoto. Day 8: Today we will head up to El Cañon de Somoto, located 13 kilometres from Somoto city. This beautful canyon was formed by the river Coco eroding through big, hard rock. The canyon is 4.7 kilometres long and 100 meters deep. We will spend the day enjoying the canyon and its surroundings. In the afternoon we will head back to Estelí. Day 9: Today we will drive back to the Pacific Coast where we will pass the impressive volcanic range called Los Maribios. Just before the Colonial City of Leon, we will visit the sleepy farming village of San Jacinto. Here the earth is boiling with volcanic activity, forming mud pools. Once in Leon, we will check into the hotel and relax. Day 10: Today we will go to the youngest (and very active) volcano in Central America, Cerro Negro. We will visit the two active craters, feel the heat, smell the gases and enjoy the views. To get down the volcano, we give you the option to walk or go sandboarding! Day 11: Our last day in Nicaragua. We will spend the day at the beach of Las Peñitas to relax! Day 12: Transport to the airport or continue your trip with one of our many extensions!
